Plant City Observer

2024 Year in Review: October

The headliner for the 4th Annual Central Florida Leadership Prayer Breakfast was Florida First Lady, Casey DeSantis. Her husband, Governor Ron DeSantis, joined her at the event. Together the two spoke about the structured, strong work of faith communities in helping Floridians. Hurricane Milton’s eyewall—where the highest winds blow, passed just a few miles south of Plant City. At the time, Milton had downgraded to a Category 2 hurricane, but it dumped 13 inches of rain, and spun up tornadoes as close as Dover. According to PC Weather Boy, at its peak, Plant City experienced wind gusts of 100 miles per hour. In Plant City, Milton damaged 1,075 buildings, 1,056 residences, and caused $24.7 million of wind damage, and $21.6 million in flood damage. The City Commission and the Hillsborough County Board of Commissioners sealed the deal for $1.5 million to renovate the 1914 Plant City High School Building. The East Hillsborough Historical Society operates in the building.
