The American Association of University Women is looking for Plant City area women to join its organization.
AAUW is an international non-partisan non-profit, whose members have been working to impact the lives of girls and women since 1881. The national agenda includes, but is not limited to, critical issues that affect girls and women, such as equity issues in the workplace, reproductive rights, human trafficking, Title IX, civil rights and education.
The Tampa branch of AAUW recently completed an exciting year. Some highlights include a sponsorship of a middle school student to attend a Tech Trek Camp and awarding scholarships to two University of South Florida students.
Maria Roallos, a Riverview eight-grader, was the recipient of the Tech Trek participant scholarship. Tech Trek is a researched-based program designed to raise the curiosity of middle school girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
This year’s USF scholarship recipients were Kimberly Tavares, a nursing student, and Ashely Stewart, a master’s of social work student.
In an effort to share the vision with university students more effectively, a student affiliate AAUW chapter was established at USF. Students Akintwe Olukemi (Kemi) and Emma Lopez were instrumental in working to see the realization of this project. Additionally, activities, such as Operation Helping Hand: Sock Drive for local homeless veterans, is a testament of AAUW’s commitment to address varied community concerns.
Chapter programming, such as Prose and Poetry & Books, and People and Places study groups, as well as presentations from guest speakers help members nourish mind, body, and spirit.
Membership is open to women with an associate degree or higher and female college student affiliates. If you want to make a difference by working to empower girls and women in your community, as well as globally, please contact Director of Publicity and Correspondence Dr. Berthenya (Bert) Dunbar at (813) 245-2820.
