ARTIST PROFILE: Lee Brice

Lee Brice seems to approach music like a point guard handles a basketball game: He does well for himself and makes his teammates look good, too.

The South Carolina-born country singer has had just as much success writing songs for other artists as he has for himself. He has three chart-topping singles to his own name and co-wrote hits for Garth Brooks and the Eli Young Band, among others. Music came so naturally for Brice that he quit two possible careers — engineering and football — to pursue his dream of becoming a big-time country star.

Brice began his music career on the piano, singing and playing for the crowd at church, and picked up the guitar to write his own melodies.

He also had established himself as a football player and took his talents to Clemson. Brice served as long snapper, until an arm injury required surgery to correct. While recovering from the procedure, he decided he didn’t have the motivation to continue football or to become a civil engineer, as he had planned originally.

So, he returned to music. He was primarily a songwriter when, in 2007, he had the opportunity to write for Brooks, his idol. Brice then signed to Nashville’s Curb Records and released the single, “She Ain’t Right.” In 2009, Brice’s single, “Love Like Crazy” appeared on the country chart. It went Top 10 in July 2010, peaking at No. 3, and remained on the chart for 56 weeks. His 2011 single, “A Woman Like You,” became his first No. 1 single.
