ARTIST PROFILE: Third Day

After 12 albums, multiple Grammys and nearly two decades of performing, Christian rock band Third Day has witnessed the power of music to impact lives.

Third Day was formed in Marietta, Ga., in the 1990s by lead singer Mac Powell, guitarist Mark Lee and former member Billy Wilkins. Bassist Tai Anderson and drummer David Carr later joined the group.

The band’s name is a biblical reference to Jesus’ rising from the dead on the third day following His crucifixion.

Starting with humble roots, the band got its start in church. In 1993, it began to tour more extensively in Atlanta and saved $3,000 to record its first full-length album.

The band worked to release more music but got its break while playing  at the Strand Theatre, in Marietta. The owners offered the band a contract to sign with a new independent record label, Gray Dot Records. The band released a self-titled album, which sold 20,000 copies. Shortly after, Reunion Records bought out their Grey Dot contract and signed the band to a multi-album deal.

Reunion Records re-released “Third Day,” which sold more than 300,000 copies under the new label. The album also yielded their only mainstream rock radio hit in the United States, “Nothing at All.”

Since then, Third Day has toured around the world, collaborated on the soundtrack for “Passion of the Christ,” won four Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, 20 Dove Awards, among many other accomplishments.

Third Day released its 12th album, “Miracle,” in November 2012. The Miracle Tour started February 2013 and will end in May.
