Plant City Observer

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Derek McBride

The Plant City Dolphins Mighty Mite team beat Turkey Creek, 31-6, August 25, and much of that came from Derek McBride’s three quarters at running back. McBride gained nearly 270 yards and scored all of the Dolphins’ touchdowns, helping them get to a 3-0 record.

How long have you been playing football?

Three years.

You had a really good game against Turkey Creek. What was it like playing that day?

It was good.

How did you get so many yards that day?

Just running hard.

How do you feel about the rest of the season? Do you think the Dolphins will be good?

Yes, sir.

What do you think your record will be at the end of the year?

10-0.

Do you have any personal goals this year?

I want to accomplish scoring every touchdown in the whole game, every game.

What’s your favorite thing about football?

Running and hitting. My favorite thing to do is running, so that’s why I picked it. If it wasn’t running, then I’d probably like basketball, or even baseball.

Do you play other sports?

I’m going to play basketball next season, but that’s it.

Do you play any other positions on the field?

I play quarterback, but that’s it.

Sounds like running back is your favorite, though.

Nope. Wide receiver, but I can’t (play it) because no one throws as good as me.

Is there any sport you’ve always wanted to play that you haven’t tried yet?

Soccer.

What position would you play?

I would be a guarder.

What do you like to do for fun when you’re not playing football?

I like to play football at home.

What’s your favorite subject in school?

Math.

What’s your favorite football movie?

“Remember the Titans.”

What’s your NFL team?

The Seahawks, because they have Marshawn Lynch.

You’ve met him at an All-Star camp?

I have. And I want to be like Tavon Austin.

Was Marshawn Lynch nice to you?

Nope. He made me do 10 push-ups for knocking down a cone.

Let’s say you go to the NFL and get a whole bunch of money with your first contract. What’s the first thing you buy?

A Lamborghini.

If you met a kid younger than you who just started playing football, and he asks you how to be a good football player, what would you tell him?

Running and hitting, and do your drills.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

(To be) invisible.

What would you use it for?

To be invisible and scare people.

If you could meet any famous person, who would it be?

Tavon Austin. I haven’t met him. I’ve watched videos of him, but I have not met him.

What would you do if you could hang out with him for a day?

I’d want to race him.

Think you could beat him?

No. He’s fast.
