Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested 11 suspects today in connection with a cockfighting ring operating in Plant City.
According to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reports, deputies received information of cockfighting at 513 Greenway Drive, Plant City, this morning. When deputies arrived at around 12:45 p.m., a cockfight was in progress.
Several suspects fled the scene once detectives arrived. However, the Sheriff’s Office was able to make 11 arrests:
Guadalupe Herrera, 64, of 513 Greenway Drive, Plant City
Charges: Owning equipment for use in animal fighting (28 counts); owning domestic animal for the purpose of fighting (46 counts); cruelty to animals (five counts); betting on animal fighting; and owning property for the purpose of animal fighting
Peggy Cole, of 513 Greenway Drive, Plant City
Charges: Owning equipment for use in animal fighting (28 counts); owning domestic animal for the purpose of fighting (46 counts); cruelty to animals (five counts); betting on animal fighting; and owning property for the purpose of animal fighting
Rachel Moreno, 21, of 513 Greenway Drive, Plant City
Charges: Attending the fighting of animals, and betting on animal fighting
Andrew Mendoza, 23, of 1306 Candy Cane Lane, Plant City
Charges: Attending the fighting of animals, and betting on animal fighting
Porfirio Cruz, 22, of 513 Greenway Drive, Plant City
Charges: Attending the fighting of animals, and betting on animal fighting
Abel Villanueva-Hidalgo, of 511 Langord Drive E., Plant City
Charges: Attending the fighting of animals, and betting on animal fighting
Armando Reyes-Burgos, 23, of 1310 East Trapnell Road, Plant City
Charges: Attending the fighting of animals, and betting on animal fighting
Antonio Gutierrez-Trevino, 22, of 3300 Boot Bay Road, Plant City
Charges: Attending the fighting of animals, and betting on animal fighting
Alejandrino Toribio-Gomez, 41, of 609 Ball St., Plant City
Charges: Attending the fighting of animals, and betting on animal fighting
Davey Leyva, 19, of 7317 Jill Lane, Zephyrhills
Charges: Attending the fighting of animals, and betting on animal fighting
Miguel Romo, 29, of 307 Wilder Road, Plant City
Charges: Attending the fighting of animals, and betting on animal fighting
When deputies arrived, they observed an fight ongoing in the back yard. In the back yard, there was a cockfighting ring with one dead rooster inside, with another live rooster actively attacking it. Three other roosters were located nearby, with two found in a recently dug hole.
There were more than 50 roosters being raised on the property, in individual pens for the purpose of cockfighting.
Animal Control responded to the scene to seize animals.
