A school bus headed toward Plant City High School failed to stop at a red light and struck a 19-year-old pedestrian early Thursday morning.
A school bus struck a pedestrian after the driver failed to stop at a red light on Alexander Street this morning, according to Plant City Police Department.
The 19-year-old pedestrian, Carl Duggan, had finished his overnight shift at Winn-Dixie and was walking home when he was struck by a bus headed toward Plant City High School at 6:32 a.m., according to PCPD spokesman Al Van Duyne. Duggan had waited until he had the right of way and then proceeded to walk across the cross walk at the Alexander Street and Donna Drive intersection.
Van Duyne said the bus, which had 11 students on board, ran the red light and struck Duggan. He said no students on board the bus were injured and Duggan was transported to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center with non life threatening injuries.
“He has a couple of fractures and tons of cuts and abrasions, but there are no life threatening injuries,” Van Duyne said.
Katherine Harrell, the bus driver, was cited for running the red light. No additional charges are pending at this time, according to PCPD. Following the crash PCPD and the Fire Rescue responded and the intersection was shut down to traffic for approximately one hour, according to Van Duyne.
