Camp Extravaganza, Healthy Kids Day make Saturday double-header at YMCA

Camp Extravaganza at the Plant City Family YMCA comes with an added bonus this Saturday: it’s running concurrently with the national Healthy Kids Day initiative.

All Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA locations will host Healthy Kids Day on Saturday as a free way to get kids active through games, pool activities, music, healthy snacks and more. Parents can also join in on the fun and learn how to develop healthy routines for their kids at home to keep them sound of mind and body when they’re not having fun at the Y.

“When kids are out of school, they can face hurdles that prevent them from reaching their full potential,” senior communications director Lalita Llerena said in a news release. “Research shows without access to out-of-school learning activities, kids fall behind academically. Kids also gain weight twice as fast during summer than the school year. As spring turns to summer, Healthy Kids Day is a powerful reminder not to let children idle away their summer days. Instead, the Y wants families to focus on helping children imagine what they can accomplish over the summer.”

Camp Extravaganza will bring even more activities to the Plant City Y, from pool relays and a mini camp to sports and family Zumba, that morning and afternoon. The day is meant to highlight the Plant City Y’s summer offerings and encourage families to sign their kids up for the location’s summer camp. As with Healthy Kids Day, there is no cost for families to attend the event and have some fun.

“It’s open to the whole community,” Elizabeth Patton said. “We’re showcasing all the excitement that our summer camp’s going to have to offer this year.”

Camp Extravaganza and Healthy Kids Day run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The Plant City Family YMCA is located at 1507 YMCA Place. For more information, call 813-757-6677.
