Car crash kills one

Members of the Plant City Police Department’s Traffic Management Unit continue to investigate a fatal traffic crash that occurred at about 9 p.m. Feb. 20, at the intersection of West State Road 574 and Elnor Street around 9 p.m. last night.

According to investigators, Hildiberto Salmeron, of Seffner, was traveling eastbound along S.R. 574 when he lost control of his 2000 Toyota and crossed the double yellow line. Linda Washington Box, a Plant City resident, was driving westbound on S.R. 574 in a 1996 Dodge approaching Salmeron.

According to witnesses, Box swerved to avoid a collision but was too late. Salmeron struck Box head-on.

Plant City Fire Rescue extricated Box from the vehicle and transported her to South Florida Baptist Hospital. She was later pronounced dead as a result of the injuries she sustained in the crash. Salmeron sustained minor injuries.

The investigation continues at this time, and more information will be released as it becomes available. No charges have been filed as of this release.
