The empty chairs that lined Collins Street and Reynolds Street Friday morning were occupied at full capacity that evening by those who turned out for the Plant City Christmas Parade.

Though the annual event was timed for 7 p.m., dense crowds filled the two streets long before it began.

“From the beginning to the end, the roads were filled with people,” explained Sharon Moody, vice president and committee member for the Christmas parade.

She said that in her 30 years of serving, this year’s parade had proven to be the best.

Adults and children alike pressed against the barricades, anticipating the spectacle they were about to witness.

Plant City Mayor Rick Lott and several city commissioners threw beads into the crowds as they were slowly escorted down the corridors in convertibles.

To add to the excitement, Plant City police officers spiraled around in circles on motorbikes, flashing red and blue lights.

However, cheers began to heighten as the procession of floats and rides began appearing down Collins Street.

Not only did the kids from Chris Welbon Karate Clubs wave to the audience, they also showed off their skills with a quick demonstration.

Strawberry Crest High School had one of many school bands that filled the atmosphere with live, upbeat instrumentation.

And there were those who amplified the parade with their vocals.

Elves smiled and waved as they passed by on platforms.

Also, decorated and lit trees, trains, big boxes of presents and snow all made their way down the streets.

And of course, the show wouldn’t be complete without Santa himself. He and Mrs. Claus came riding down, seated on a sleigh, guided by their famous reindeer.

“This year was just awesome,” said Moody. “It’s a cause for the community and children.”
