City proposes new fire station

A third fire station was proposed for Plant City at the July 20 budget meeting.

Currently, Plant City Fire Rescue is comprised of two stations that are divided into two response areas. A third station, Assistant City Manager Bill McDaniel says, would reduce response times while creating a third response zone.

The proposed third fire station would be built in Mike E. Sansone Community Park, within five miles of County Line Road and near other areas that are planned for development, such as the Varrea Planned Development District. The new station would also be near North Park Isles and Frontage Road apartments. If approved, construction on the new fire station, which is estimated to cost about $2.34 million, could begin as early as late 2016.

“The proposed location of the third station addresses both current, planned and future development in the northeast and east sections of the city,” McDaniel said in a statement.

Six additional firefighters are proposed by Plant City Fire Rescue Chief Dan Azzariti. Necessary vehicles for the station would be taken out of the existing vehicle inventory.
