A stuffy or runny nose may be a sign of cold or allergies. But if you have been treated for these ailments and are still experiencing sinus issues, you may be dealing with a different condition. If you experience sinus discomfort for many weeks or is recurrent, even after being treated, you may have chronic or recurrent sinusitis.
Chronic sinusitis is a common condition that causes inflammation in the sinus passages, which may lead to excess drainage and discomfort. Chronic sinusitis is often brought on by infection, nasal polyps, or by a deviated septum.
Many patients who experience chronic sinusitis are just seeking relief and want to avoid excessive antibiotics and their side effects.
“Some patients with chronic sinusitis suffer for months on end and have been on antibiotics. That’s why we recommend balloon sinuplasty for patients who qualify. This procedure is proven to be an effective treatment for many sinus problems,” said Scott Powell MD, a board-certified otolaryngologist with Florida E.N.T. & Allergy.
A balloon sinuplasty, also called Balloon Sinus Dilation, is a minimally invasive procedure during which a balloon catheter is inserted into the nose, and then the sinus. This balloon catheter is then gradually inflated to widen the sinus pathway. Once the dilation is complete, the balloon is deflated and removed, but the sinus remains open. By gently reconfiguring the structure of the sinus passage, the procedure restores normal sinus drainage and keeps post-operative pain to a minimum. This is all done in less than one hour.
Unlike traditional sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty does not require incisions or removal of any bone or tissue. The many benefits of this procedure include:
-Absence of surgical incisions
-Minimal risk
-Reduced bleeding
-No damage to surrounding tissue
-Shorter recovery time
-No anesthesia
This procedure is minimally invasive and most patients are able to return to all activities the same or next day. Studies indicate that most patients experience continued sinus health for over two years following a balloon sinuplasty procedure.
