Driver crashes into police patrol car

A Dover resident crashed into a police deputy’s patrol car while the officer was stopped at another unrelated car accident, Dec. 1.

Joaquin Sanchez-Sanchez, 40, was arrested and charged with DUI with Property Damage and Expired Driver’s License, according to police reports.

Around 7 p.m. Deputy Jonathan Winters, 27, was seated inside his marked police car with his emergency lights activated while assisting with traffic from a crash at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and North Forbes Road in Dover.

Sanchez-Sanchez  struck the rear of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s patrol vehicle with his 2007 Dodge Durango SUV. He was suspected of being impaired, and a DUI investigation was conducted by the HCSO DUI Unit. Sanchez-Sanchez was arrested for DUI and had a blood alcohol concentration of .246, which is triple the legal limit of .08, according to reports.

Sanchez-Sanchez, who was uninjured, was booked into Orient Road Jail and later released after he posted bond. Winters was not seriously injured and was treated and released at the scene after he was examined by Hillsborough County Fire Rescue paramedics. He will spend the next day or two home recuperating with only minor bumps and bruising.
