A drunk driver was seen speeding on State Road 60 near Dover Road and later crashed at 1:40 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 8.
A Hillsborough County Sheriff’s deputy saw a 2014 black Honda Civic driven by Alina Chavez, 23, of Mulberry, traveling east on State Road 60 at Mt. Carmel Road. The deputy attempted to catch up to the vehicle, but lost sight of the vehicle as it approached Dover Road.
About one mile east of Dover Road, the vehicle had been involved in a traffic crash with a 2006 Chevrolet pickup
truck. The pickup truck had been traveling east on State Road 60 when the Honda struck it from behind. The impact broke the rear axle of the truck and caused it to overturn multiple times ejecting the driver.
The driver of the pickup was transported to Tampa General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He is listed in stable condition.
Deputies conducted a DUI investigation and determined that Chavez showed signs of impairment and arrested her. Chavez was charged with DUI with Serious Bodily Injury and Driving Under the Influence over 0.15 when her breath tests revealed a BAC of .206 and .221.
Chavez was transported to Orient Road Jail.
