November is Prematurity Awareness month, and the Durant High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America let it be known last week.
The FBLA hosted “Prematurity Week,” in conjunction with March of Dimes, donating all proceeds earned to the charity. Students and teachers participated to show their support for the cause.
“Looking forward as a club, e look forward to participating in Prematurity Awareness Month and making a strong impact in our community by bringing attention to this issue,” chapter President Kurt Trussell said.
Some of the events were fairly small. Bagels were sold to students one morning for 50 cents, and on another day, students paid $1 to guess how many Skittles were in a big baby bottle.
“We got the big bottle because it went with the idea of Prematurity Week, and premature births,” chapter historian Kevin O’Hare said.
And then there was “Purple-Out Day,” where students and teachers showed up to school decked out in purple. The FBLA also covered the walls with purple posters for World Prematurity Day, which was Nov. 17.
The chapter raised $100, before expenses, and is still accepting donations. To donate, call (813) 287-2600.
