The football team tweeted defensive back Grover Wills passed away last night.
Durant High School's football team announced on social media the loss of senior Grover Wills early Monday morning.
"With heavy hearts, last night, we lost not only a teammate but a brother," the team wrote on Twitter. "Rest in peace Grover Wills! Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers."
Wills, a senior, played defensive back for the Cougars. The Durant community took to social media Monday morning to mourn the loss of their classmate, teammate, friend and brother.
"Love my brother/friend/teammate forever, can’t believe he’s gone," teammate Cameron Myers tweeted. "Lord take care of him."
Durant's SGA announced on Twitter the school will host a candlelight service for Wills at the football stadium at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.
UPDATE 2:40 p.m.: In a Monday afternoon news release, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office stated Wills was shot outside the Mobil gas station at 612 W. Lumsden Road in Brandon just before 8 p.m. Sunday after a confrontation with an adult male. Wills was driven to a local hospital for treatment after the shooting by an associate, who had also driven him to the gas station.
The sheriff's office stated detectives suspect the shooting was drug-related and not a random act, and declined to release additional information in the afternoon. Detectives are "in contact with the other party and his attorney," according to HCSO.
