GracePoint Church Sells ‘Cue For A Cause

It’s still too early to tell which football teams will be playing in this year’s Super Bowl but it’s not too soon to plan a watch party, complete with a crowd-pleasing menu for folks who attend to watch the game, the halftime show or are just there for the commercials.

GracePoint Church members want to help with your feast by firing up their smokers for the 11th annual Pig-A-Palooza pork butt sale, just in time for Super Bowl weekend.

Church volunteers will spend more than two days seasoning and smoking approximately 300 pork butts ranging in size from eight to 10 pounds. The fun begins Wed., Feb. 5 when more than 1,800 sheets of aluminum foil are cut to cover the meat and the gluten-free blend of secret spices are combined. The following day the butts are slathered with mustard then rolled in the spice blend. On Friday, a dedicated team of 30 – 40 pitmasters fire up the smokers and, starting at 4 p.m., stay up all night tending to the meat on six to eight gargantuan smokers (one affectionately named “Big Bertha”). The tender and fall-off-the-bone meat will be ready for pickup Sat., Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. and should make about 20 pulled pork sandwiches.

Proceeds from the sale benefit several of the church’s charitable endeavors. “Our goal is to raise funds for our youth to go to camp as well as our various local and global missions,” said event chairperson Sherry Scheitler. “Last year we raised more than $20,000.”

In an effort to share their abundance, the church donates unsold butts to local police and fire stations, Family Ministries of Florida in Seffner and other local ministries.

To order a pork butt scan the QR code, which will take you to the ordering site, where credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Venmo and ACH payments are accepted. Each butt is priced at $100 and all proceeds benefit the church’s mission to exist to reflect God’s glory, point the community to His grace and make disciples of Jesus. The deadline to order is Feb. 3.

Orders will be available for pickup Feb. 8 between 10 a.m. and noon at GracePoint Church, located at 1107 Charlie Griffin Rd. Pickup locations will also be available in Lakeland and Tampa.

Scheitler said the annual event is a blessing for both the church and community. “We make money for our ministries and everyone has delicious Super Bowl food to share with friends and family,” she said.
