Bruce Anthony Long retired from Zephryhills Correctional Institute Feb. 28.
Long was born Aug. 16, 1959, in Plant City, to John and Alice Long. He is the youngest of four siblings. He was educated in Hillsborough County Public Schools and graduated from Plant City High School in 1977, where he excelled in football and track and field. He went on to further his education at Florida A&M on a full athletic scholarship. Upon leaving Florida A&M Long enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served for three years.
After serving his country he began his career in law enforcement with the State of Florida Department of Corrections. During his 30-year service with the Department of Corrections he served as manager of food services and attained the ranking of Sergeant over the mental health unit.
He is married to Valerie Long, has four children and a host of grandchildren. After retiring he plans to continue serving his community through mentoring and ministry.
