It's taken a year for the Plant City Lion's Club to book Marine warrior Michael Jernigan. He has speaking engagements all over the United States.
But beginning at 12 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, at Buddy Freddy's, Jernigan will finally speak to the club.
Jernigan entered the United States Marine Corp. on his 24th birthday in 2002. After serving a deployment in Okinawa, he deployed as a squad leader in Iraq. During his deployment in 2004, his humvee was struck by a roadside bomb. The incident caused Jernigan to lose both eyes. He also suffered from a crushed cranium, as well as severe trauma to his right hand and his left knee.
Following recoveries in Maryland and Tampa, Jernigan completed a 16-week blind rehabilitation program in Georgia. He medically retired from the Marines in 2005.
He has received a Combat Action Ribbon and a Purple Heart for his military service.
In 2008 and 2009, Jernigan attended Georgetown University, and holds a degree in history from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg. In 2012, he began working as a community outreach coordinator for Southeastern Guide Dogs.
During his speech he will be accompanied by his guide dog, Treasure.
