EXTENDED WATERING RESTRICTIONS

The Governing board of the Southwest Florida Water Management District voted on Tuesday, August 27, to extend the Modified Phase 1 Water Shortage Order and one-day-per-week watering through December 31. This is in effect for Plant City residents, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties.

The Modified Phase I Water Shortage Order also prohibits “wasteful and unnecessary” water use.

• Turn off the water when brushing your teeth or hand-washing dishes

• Wash only full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine

• Use an automatic shutoff nozzle on a garden hose – an unrestricted garden hose can waste 500 gallons an hour

 • Check for leaks in toilets, faucets, showerheads, garden hoses and swimming pools

One-day-per-week watering restrictions apply to all City of Plant City water customers and ALL WATER SOURCES, INCLUDING PRIVATE IRRIGATION WELLS, AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL OPERATION IRRIGATION SYSTEMS, PORTABLE HOSE-END SPRINKLERS, SURFACE WATERS AND PRIVATE WATER SYSTEMS. It’s important – know your allowable watering day and allowable watering times. Ensure your irrigation system is operating properly. Repair broken pipes and misaligned/broken sprinkler heads. Check and ensure irrigation system timer settings are correct and a rain shutoff device, such as a rain sensor or wireless evapotranspiration “smart” controller, is installed and working properly. Another way to save water is through efficient irrigation practices. Around 50% of the water used at a typical Florida home is through outdoor irrigation.

SIGN GRANT AWARDED
TO POSH PETALS

Historic Downtown Plant City Main Street has awarded it first sign grant to Posh Petals. This is a new program for downtown businesses to support them in their purchase of a new sign. “This is a big deal,” said Dawn Hyatt, Main Street Executive Director.

“To be a success in Plant City, you have to give back,” said Devony Wyatt, owner of Posh Petals. “Put the seeds back into the community.” Posh Petals did just that by paying the $734.19 grant forward. Wyatt redirected other funds to sponsor a Plant City youth softball team.

Criteria to win the award are: 1. Be a partner of Downtown Main Street. 2. Obtain a permit from the City of Plant City for an outdoor sign. 3. Submit an application on the Main Street web site. 4. Include a receipt or invoice for the cost of the sign—which must be between $100 and $1,000.

For more information about how to apply, go to the Downtown Main Street web site at https://www.plantcitymainstreet.org/

97 BIRTHDAY CARDS FOR GRANDMA JOHNSON

In 1954, Elton and Evelyn Johnson established a gas station. While at the station Evelyn would cook meals for her husband and children. So many people began to show up at mealtime, the couple converted the business into the first Johnson’s Restaurant. Their son, Fred and his wife, Tammy, carried on the family tradition of cooking when they opened the first Fred’s Market in 1998.

Fred’s Market held a 97th birthday celebration for Evelyn (Grandma) Johnson on September 13. Customers came by in groups to drop off cards and have photos taken with the local icon. The birthday card goal was 97. There were so many cards at the beginning of the celebration, it looked like Mrs. Johnson would end up with way more than 97 cards.
