RECORD AGAVE AMERICANA?

John Kaiser, son of Jack Kaiser, sent in a picture of the stalk standing tall in his dads’ yard. The question remained–was this agave blossom record height? Once an agave stalk starts to grow, it can grow up to 1 foot a day.

There are over 250 agave species, and depending on the species, the stalk of the agave blossom can reach a height of 40ft. Jack Kaiser believed he broke the record height for the agave blossom plant in his yard. Unfortunately, after a storm passed by last week, the agave tree fell to the ground.

After measuring, Kaiser found the stalk to be 35.5 feet tall. There are two different types of the flowering stalk–paniculate and spiculate. Kaiser’s agave stalk is an example of paniculate. After speaking to Kaiser, he said he planted his agave blossom around 2006. Usually, the plant lives for about 20 years then dies.

Because the stalk fell, Kaiser cut the stalk in half to get it out of the way. He suspects the rest of the stalk will begin to die down soon. Though it fell due to a storm, the agave blossom in Kaiser’s yard was close to record height!
