Southeastern Grocers, Inc. announces donation program
Southeastern Grocers, Inc., the parent company of local Winn-Dixie grocery stores, announced the launch of a six-week community donation program alongside Folds of Honor to benefit the spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service members.
Since 2007, the mission of Folds of Honor has been to provide educational scholarships to those affected and over the past three years the grocer, along with the generosity and support of its customers, has successfully funded more than 815 scholarships.
How can you help?
Now through the Fourth of July, Plant City Winn-Dixie customers can help support this important cause by simply rounding up their total grocery bill to the nearest dollar or by making a donation of their choice at check out in honor of United States military heroes and their loved ones. Every cent donated to Folds of Honor will help to provide private education tuition and tutoring for children in grades K-12, along with higher education tuition assistance for spouses and dependents.
Heart health seminar coming to Plant City
Building Strong Families, Inc., in collaboration with MaxLiving Health Center-Carrollwood, will host a Heart Health Seminar on Saturday, June 19, 2021, from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the Sadye Gibbs Martin Community Center in Plant City.
Speakers at the seminar will include Dr. Suzanne Demers Foley and Dr. Sabrina Sosa, covering a number of heart-conscious topics that include: What is Cholesterol; Natural Ways to Reduce Blood Pressure; the Underlying Causes of Heart Disease; and the 5 Essentials Plan for Optimal Heart Health.
While there is no cost to attend the seminar, seating is limited and pre-registration will be required for all guests by June 11, 2021. Summer BreakSpot Helps Feed Florida’s Children While School’s Out
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has partnered with schools and organizations to provide free meals to kids and teens from low-income areas to help ensure that Florida children have access to wholesome meals during summer break.
While schools are closed for the summer, The Summer BreakSpot Program proves meals at no cost to children 18 and under. When Florida schools closed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried activated the Summer BreakSpot program early, enabling providers to serve 74 million meals to children from March through August 2020.
“One of our top priorities is ensuring that all Florida kids have access to healthy, nutritious meals regardless of family income,” Fried said. “Florida is home to one million children facing food insecurity worsened by the pandemic – and for many, Summer BreakSpot meals are the only meals on which they can rely. I encourage all Florida kids facing hunger while school’s out to find a Summer BreakSpot location near them by phone, text, or online.”
Summer BreakSpot sites include open sites and camps in both residential and non-residential areas and open sites are sites where meals are available to all children in the area on a first-come, first-served basis.
