STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL DONATES $60,550

On June 26, the Florida Strawberry Festival presented a check for $60,550 to the United Food Bank.

The United Food Bank programs include Feeding Our Community, Feeding Our Future, Feeding Out Legacy, and a monthly mobile pantry. These services provide food directly to those in need by way of on-site distribution. Through donors, staff, and volunteers, a box of food is given to clients every two weeks.

A new, expanded and upgraded facility for the Food Bank is currently under construction on East Alsobrook Street.

PLANT CITY CHAMPIONS FOR YOUTH

A new, Plant City, non-profit organization has been established to support the youth of the Plant City area. Their mission statement reads, “The Club will promote activities and opportunities that help Plant City, Florida, area young people build strong character and realize their full potential as responsible citizens and leaders through service, personal development, and recreational opportunities.”

As a local-based volunteer organization, every penny collected will stay within the Plant City area. Programs offered by the former club—Optimist club of Plant City, will be continued. Academic and social growth is recognized through programs such as the Teen Talk speech contest, the Youth Excellence Awards program for outstanding high school students, a Law Appreciation dinner involving area middle school students, participation in the Parks & Recreation Annual Easter Egg Hunt, and their “Monster Mash” Trunk or Treat event, financial assistance for the Plant City High School Senior Awards program, and the distribution of at least $6,000 each year in vocational school for college scholarships to area high school graduates.

Youth athletics is an important part of growing up for many children, and the new club will continue the tradition of involvement with the Parks & Recreation flag football, basketball, and soccer leagues, including sponsorship of the skills competitions in those sports.

The Plant City Champions for Youth web site, www.pcchampionsforyouth.org, has more information on the programs offered to area youth. The club can be emailed with any information requests at pcchampionsforyouth@outlook.com or through the contact page of their web site.
