Non-profit launches Groupon campaign for Dover Elementary

A Lakeland-based nonprofit is seeking to raise funds to assist children in need at Dover Elementary School.

kidsPACK currently is running a short campaign through Groupon. The organization is asking for $10 donations, which, when matched, allows it to provide food for one child for a month.

“There are more than 100 registered homeless and hungry children that attend Dover Elementary — kids classified as ‘food insecure’ — not knowing where their next meal will come from,” said kidPACK’s Denny Fraser. “When school is not in session where they have access to subsidized school meals, they often go without.”

Each kidsPACK, which utilizes a traditional backpack, includes two breakfasts, two lunches and three dinners. During its first full year of operation in 2011, kidsPACK served 31 public schools and is providing service to more than 40 Polk County public schools already this school year. Last month, Hillsborough County approved kidsPACK to begin a collaboration to provide for the homeless students registered in its schools, beginning with Dover, because it has the most critical need.
