Frances Lindsay Johnson

Fran Johnson, of Plant City, Fla., and recently of Marietta, Georgia, died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025 Born Lucille Frances Morgan, daughter of Lester Merlyn Morgan and Agnes Edna McLaughlin Morgan in Rockwell, Iowa, Mrs. Johnson would have celebrated her 102nd birthday on the first of April.

As a young child, Fran moved to California with her family, where she was educated, later married Robert Lindsay, and had two children, Jolene and Richard.  Even while rearing her young children, Fran created a very successful corporate career with General Motors, at a time when woman were often seen as “just a secretary.” She later moved to the Atlanta area with GM and was subsequently transferred to Tampa, Florida. There she met and married John Johnson and moved to Plant City.

After her retirement, Fran became extremely involved in the Plant City community. “I retired from my job at General Motors and I was too young, I was only 57, and I didn’t want to be idle,” Johnson famously stated. With giving heart and boundless energy, Fran volunteered at the Tourist Information Center of Plant City, delivered countless meals for the Meals on Wheels organization, and, through her commitment with the medical auxiliary at the South Florida Baptist Hospital, she accrued 27,000 volunteer hours and was awarded a service pin to prove it! She also singlehandedly crocheted over 5,000 baby caps—pink for the girls and blue for the boys—for every infant born at the hospital.

As a tireless member of the Beta Sigma Phi, a non-collegiate sorority that focuses on service, friendship, and learning, Fran recruited, trained, and encouraged her fellow sisters to give of their time and talents to the sorority and their community.  Fran was recognized for her efforts with the sorority’s highest award several years ago. Furthermore, Mrs. Johnson won numerous other accolades for her volunteer contributions, was recognized on local television and radio, and was featured in local magazines and newspaper articles.

One of seven children, Fran was the last surviving sibling. Her brothers James Morgan (Barbara), Lester Morgan (Jean), Clifford Morgan (Johanna), Robert Morgan (Debbie), and sisters Margaret (Robert), and Loretta Johnson (Wallace) all preceded her as did her parents Lester and Agnes Morgan, her daughter, Jolene Lindsay Townley (Mike), and her husband, John Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her son, Richard True Lindsay and three grandchildren: Greer Anthony Sabin, (Mike) of Denver, Laura Anthony Fernandez (Fernando) of Greenville, and Scott William Anthony (Stephanie) of Charleston. She is also survived by two great-grandsons, Jackson True Linz of Greenville and Louis William Anthony of Charleston, numerous nieces and nephews, and, particularly, her beloved niece, Carey Cummins (Mike) of Fort Myers, Florida. Interment will be in Park Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles.
