There is never a dull moment at the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center. Fascinating photographs constantly walk through the door with donors ecstatic to preserve a piece of history.
With Veteran’s Day just a couple of weeks away, one notable photograph appropriately honored a fallen soldier. On Oct. 20, nieces of Norman E. McLeod brought a photograph of McLeod’s casket as it arrived in Plant City in 1921.
McLeod was a WWI casualty. He was killed in France at the second battle of the Marne, July 19, 1918. McLeod was the first Plant City mortality of WWI and the American Legion Post #26 was named for him.
McLeod’s nieces, Sandra Odom Riggio, Allene Odom Chambers and Beverly Odom Connor also donated newspaper clippings, postcards and miscellaneous artifacts.
“It was an honor to meet with these women and we will be displaying these artifacts in the future,” Executive Director Gil Gott said in an email.
