Durant’s latest rebuilding season didn’t end on a high note at Armwood.
The Cougars couldn’t get much going in their 38-0 loss to the Hawks, who bounced back from last week’s defensive battle at Hillsborough with an offensive explosion.
Durant allowed three touchdowns in the first half, starting with Eric Wilson’s 48-yard dash just under two minutes into the game. Agiye Hall caught a deep ball in double coverage for a 46-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left in the quarter, and the Hawks went up 21-0 by blocking the Cougars’ punt at 10:25, returning the ball to the DHS 5-yard line and giving it to Mario Hunt-Cruz to punch in three plays later.
Armwood could only score on Adrian Olivo’s 29-yard field goal in the third quarter, but quarterback Cam’ron Ransom snuck into the end zone with 9:51 left in the fourth quarter to put the Hawks ahead, 31-0. Rashaad Johnson picked off Durant quarterback Sean Williams on the Cougars’ subsequent drive and the Hawks were able to drive 28 yards and give it to Jaquell Narine until the former Strawberry Crest Charger found the end zone for the last touchdown of the night, setting up a running clock with just under seven minutes left to play.
Though the Cougars couldn’t get anything going on offense, the defense played well for much of the game. Linebacker Izaya Miller recovered an Armwood fumble with 3:53 left in the first quarter and was a consistent playmaker for Durant’s stop unit. The Cougars also caught a lucky break at 5:20 in the second quarter when Braxten Houston surprised Ransom in coverage and snagged an interception that would have been brought back for a Durant pick six if not for offsetting penalties called just after Houston snatched the pass out of the air.
Durant will now head into the offseason with one of the smallest groups of graduating seniors in the district and plenty of underclassmen who can now say they’ve been battle tested at the highest level.
