Explore Your City: Northern Residential District

By Amber Jurgensen

  • This house is known as “The Lion House,” because of the two lion statues at its front door. John and Mary Chapman built it in 1908 for $4,500. It was once one of the most modern houses in Plant City. The upstairs had a bathroom — an unusual feature then.

  • Both the north Plant City and downtown residential districts have brick streets and are shaded by overarching oak trees.

  • Spanish moss is a popular sight in the south. The moss is an epiphyte. It grows on other plants without taking any water or nutrients from them and uses the host plant for support and protection.

  • This sign on Collins Street is located in the north Plant City historic residential district, which was added to the register in 1993.

  • A variety of bungalows are also found in the district. Originating in southern California in the late nineteenth century, the style became popular before World War I and continued to be a major housing type in Florida until the 1930s.

  • The term bungalow is from the Indian Hindustani word bangala and means belonging to Bengal. They were first built(low to the ground and sheltered by large porches to deal with the heat) in India in the mid-nineteenth century by the British.

  • The historic downtown and north Plant City residential districts are lush with trees. This tree is in front of the Roux home on Calhoun Street.

  • The E.T. Roux House at 202 West Calhoun St. was built for Col. Edwin T. Roux in 1904. The structure demonstrates a vernacular interpretation of the Greek Revival style.

  • Dr. Walter Alsobrook built his home on North Evers Street, facing east. When the 1914 Plant City High School building was built across the street, his wife insisted that the back of the school (facing the Alsobrook's home) have columns like the entrance.

  • The Alsobrook house was moved to 508 N. Whitewall St., where the house sat vacant after switching a number of owners, and it fell into disrepair. Cenovio Villa, who owns Project Villa LLC, has been working to restore the home to its former glory.

The district comprises a total of 90 buildings, of which 74 contribute to the historic character of the neighborhood and 16 are considered noncontributing. Noncontributing buildings include those erected during the period of significance that have been severely altered and those constructed after 1942, according to the register application.

Added to register: 1993
Address: Roads include Herring, Wheeler, Tever and Palmer streets and those in between
Architectural style: Wood frame vernacular, bungalows, and a number of revival and romantic
Additional: This district also includes the 1914 PCHS Community Center and the First Baptist Church.
