Sweetbay Supermarket was filled with Burney Elementary students after school Oct. 26. They roamed the aisles of the 507 S. Wheeler street grocer, counting, spying and searching for items for a math worksheet scavenger hunt.
The Math day was organized by math coach Kristy Fisher. Students from kindergarten to fifth grade were given a worksheet with grade appropriate math questions. The students were asked to find foods that were packaged in dozens, estimate the cost to make nachos and find items that are squares, circles and triangles. After the students finished their math sheets, they could get a delicious piece of cake made in Sweetbay’s bakery.
“Anytime we can show parents what they’re working on in school can be applied to everyday life is a good thing,” Fisher said.
Fisher collaborated with Swetbay’s office coordinator Richie Long to create the successful event.
“The kids get to come out into the “real world” and not just learn in a classroom,” Long said. “And it’s fun for us too.”
This is the second year Burney students have stormed the aisles of Sweetbay to count and learn. The turnout was about even with last year’s turnout, if not more. The event was from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Each student got a goodie bag and a clipboard. The class with the most participation will get a pizza party. For the parents, there was a raffle to win a Sweetbay gift card.
