After staving off a few Durant rallies, the Plant City Lady Raiders improved to 5-5 in the district with a 50-38 win.
Shayna Lawrence and the Lady Raiders (10-10) jumped out to a 13-4 lead right out of the gate, but the Lady Cougars (1-15) made it a 15-13 game early in the second quarter. Durant wouldn’t get many chances to take the lead, largely thanks to the defensive play of Lawrence and company, but seemed to find momentum whenever sophomore guard Tahira Rodriguez got in rhythm.
Things got sloppy in the fourth quarter, which began with a 36-29 Plant City lead. Mishap after mishap led to a 41-29 score with 4:30 left to play, but both teams found some luck around the perimeter near the end.
Plant City will host Newsome at 6:30 on Jan. 22 for its Senior Night, and Durant will begin a two-game home stand by hosting Riverview at the same time.
