Plant City may not be Rio de Janeiro, but some locals have gotten into the Olympic spirit before the Summer Games.
Turkey Creek Middle held its annual Olympic Day at its football field Friday, May 13, throughout the day. Seventh and eighth graders competed against each other before lunch, and the sixth graders competed against themselves in the afternoon.
The event, now 13 years old, featured track and field events, such as foot races, the long jump and the shot put, a basketball shootout, archery, disc golf, cornhole and more. Special needs students competed in bocce, disc golf and track races.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse and their horses also made an appearance at the games.
