The Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce, Plant City Police Department, City of Plant City and Plant City Housing Authority all joined forces to host a ribbon cutting for the new community police substation Wednesday, July 27.
The substation, a two-room unit where residents can go for safety, privacy and access to law enforcement officers, is located at 513 S. Maryland Ave. in the public housing district. The last time a police substation existed in the housing district was in 2006.
Following a ribbon cutting, a family-friendly event featuring food and activities was held for residents of the neighborhood. The event was put together by Plant City Housing Authority Executive Director Pat Dexter and Housing Manager Omayra Vanderpool.
Plant City Police Chief Ed Duncan and members of his agency were present at the ceremony.
“We’re going forward,” Duncan said. “It’s rewarding to know we’ve got a community that comes together for a common cause.”
City Manager Mike Herr and Commissioners Mary Thomas Mathis and Nate Kilton also came out to the ribbon cutting.
“This is a great partnership between the community and law enforcement,” Herr said. “I want to applaud the efforts of Patricia (Dexter) … and our officers. We are truly blessed to be in our community.”
