Although lightning threatened to end the game early, the Bloomingdale Bulls were able to wrap up a 16-7 win over Strawberry Crest.
It was almost like an exercise in Murphy’s Law for the Chargers (0-1; 0-0 district): most unlucky breaks that could have happened, did happen. Fourth-down false start penalties, loose tackling – especially on Bloomingdale (1-0; 0-0 district) quarterback Isaiah McIntyre – and several dropped passes that could have been touchdowns.
The Chargers did strike first, when Arjay Smith scored at 8:35 in the first quarter, but Bloomingdale answered almost immediately with a McIntyre touchdown pass to Tommy McLaughlin.
The final Bloomingdale scores came just before halftime, when McIntyre recovered from a broken play and threw a touchdown pass to Patrick Wiedrich. The extra point kick was good but, oddly, the Bulls accepted an encroachment penalty against the Chargers and opted to try again. That kick was promptly blocked, putting the score at 13-7.
The Bulls made a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the half, bumping the score to 16-7.
In other area action, Durant fell to Armwood, 37-14, and the Steinbrenner-Plant City game was cancelled due to lightning. At the time, the score was tied at 7-7.
