The Durant High School Homecoming crowd was treated with an epic shootout but, unfortunately, not a win.
Hillsborough High School brought their A-game to Durant and left with a 55-49 win, in which the Terriers never trailed.
Nearly every time the Terriers scored – barring a first-quarter safety and an 80-yard strike in the second – the Cougars answered right back. Much of that was thanks to a monster effort by senior wide receiver Garrett Rentz, who nearly matched his 2014 touchdown total (and, possibly, his receptions total) with two scores and over 100 yards receiving. His first score came 28 seconds after Hillsborough’s opening touchdown, a 72-yard circus catch along the home sideline that fired up the crowd and the bench.
Quarterback Erick Davis also played well, scoring four touchdowns on the ground – including one with 3:03 left to play, a 13-yard keeper that put the Cougars within six points.
It was a great display of offense by the Cougars, but the defense gave up two first downs late in the game – both of which came after the Terriers backed themselves up an extra 20 and 25 yards on penalties. An onside kick attempt failed, Hillsborough got their first downs when they needed to, and the Terriers escaped with the win.
