Tampa Bay Tech enacted revenge after last season’s region quarterfinal loss to Durant by defeating the Cougars 31-10 Thursday on the road.
Once again, turnovers plagued Durant. The Cougars (0-3) turned the ball over three times. A fumble on a muffed punt in the first half led to a TBT score, while Trey VanDeGrift threw three interceptions in the second half, one that killed a drive that had the Cougars in the red zone as Durant was trying to mount a comeback.
TBT’s Kay Jay Crawford had two of the picks for the Titans (1-1). Quarterback Deion King had a 59-yard run with a minute left to add to the score.
Durant’s two scores came on a 50-yard run by John Hendricks and a 32-yard field goal by Derek Wells. A 65-yard punt return by Cris Atkins was negated by a block in the back with two minutes to play in the game.
Durant went into the half down 18-10, but were shutout in the second half. The Cougars will open district play next week at rival Plant City.
