The building that once held the post office in historic downtown is now up for sale.
Some residents would say that this action has been a long time coming. The post office, located at 301 W. Reynolds St., originally closed two years ago on June 27, 2013 due to health and safety violations. Deterioration was also noticeable in the building’s cellar.
City leaders are in agreement that the building will need a lot of work before the next business is up and running.
“They will have to make renovations internally,” said City Manager Mike Herr.
In spite of the repair costs, estimated at $1.4 million, the building has a prime location in downtown, one that leaders hope will attract potential business owners.
“I’m hoping it will attract some type of retail business to go in,” Commissioner Mike Sparkman said.
The parking lot accompanying the business is also for sale.
“A potential use for the building is for it to be transformed into a business incubation center,” said Herr. “That could be tremendously exciting.”
Appraisal work has not yet started on the building, according to spokeswoman Enola Rice. The notice that was posted on the building was for the public’s edification, and will remain up for 15 days.
For now, residents can drop off their outgoing mail at the Plant City Walden Woods Main Post Office, located at 2501 Walden Woods Drive.
