Plant City Relay for Life will host its first tea party Saturday, Feb. 21, as a fundraiser for teams who will participate in this year’s relay. Tickets will go on sale Jan. 5.
“I know everyone loves the idea of high tea, so I figured it would make an excellent fundraiser,” said Janice Perkins, fundraising chair for Relay for Life.
Perkins, who used to work at Camellia Rose Tea Room, describes her love for tea as an “infatuation,” and she wants to share that passion with other Relay supporters.
Mighty Leaf donated tea for the event. In addition to salad, scones, sandwiches and desserts, guests will enjoy hearing from guest speaker Ava Raab. Raab, 6, is a kidney cancer survivor, and an Honorary Youth Survivor for Relay.
“She’s going to speak about her battle with cancer … and how she feels now,” Perkins said.
Tickets are $12 individually, or a table for eight people costs $80. Money from ticket sales can be donated to any Relay participant of the guest’s choice and go toward a team’s final goal.
Guests who purchase a table will supply their own tea cups, tea pots, tablecloths and decor. Raab will choose which table has the best decorations, and that table will win a gift basket or other prize.
The tea party is open to anyone, whether or not he or she plans to participate in Relay for Life. But space is limited to just over 100 people.
“I think we’re going to sell out pretty quick,” Perkins said. “With it being our first year, we don’t want it to get out of hand with too many guests.”
There also will be a silent auction. Perkins is currently looking for donations of auction items, giveaway prizes and food, from individuals or restaurants.
Because the food will be donated, there will be no set menu to take food allergies into consideration. The event is also not recommended for children under the age of 10.
