+ Rec & Parks winners announced
On Friday, Dec. 5, the Plant City Recreation and Parks Department announced the winners of its flag football championship tournaments.
Because the Munchkin and Junior leagues do not play in a championship tournament, only the Senior, Premier and Elite leagues produced the following winners:
SENIOR LEAGUE
Winning team: Chargers
Roster: Pagan Edgeman, Willie Fleming, Lydia Linares, Tyler Mirkle, Alexander Rodrigues, Mark Smith, Christopher Thomas Jr., Julian Yanez.
PREMIER LEAGUE
Winning team: Panthers
Roster: Ethan Belluccio, Ellie Hall, Joshua Nystrom, Tre’ Ragan, Courtney Sanders, Nicholas Strickler, Corbin Trottier, Joshua Gomer.
ELITE LEAGUE
Winning Team: Bucs and Cowboys (co-champions)

BASKETBALL
+ Area rivalries heat up
All three Plant City-area teams have been duking it out.
After the Chargers beat the Raiders in the Dec. 4 boys game, 59-44, the two then-undefeated girls teams squared off. Thanks to a strong defense, the Lady Raiders scored a 55-38 win at home and handed Crest its first district loss.
On Dec. 9, the Raiders lost to the Chargers 78 to 58.
The Lady Chargers extended their lead by outscoring the Lady Cougars, 39-6, en route to a 61-25 win. No Durant player scored more than six points in the effort, and Terra Brooks and Brianna Matthews combined for 36 points.
