+ P.C. athlete to carry torch
In the last leg of the Special Olympics World Games Law Enforcement Torch Run, the athlete carrying the Flame of Hope will be none other than William Corsi.
It was announced Monday, April 27, that Corsi, 32, had been selected to join the run. He will be the first Florida athlete to be chosen for the run, and one of 10 from all over the world.
“He has been a Global Messenger for Special Olympics since 2006, delivering speeches and presentations across Florida to spread awareness of Special Olympics Florida and its many programs,” Special Olympics Florida-Hillsborough County said in a release. “He was awarded the 2015 Athlete of the Year for Hillsborough County, has won several gold medals competing at Special Olympics events, and holds several leadership positions. He also is fundraising for new running shoes for his jaunt at World Games.”

+ Firefighter Games to wrap up
The Florida Firefighter Games, a statewide competition with 42 events, is wrapping up its 7v7 soccer tournament Friday, May 1, in Plant City. The semifinal and final rounds will be held at Otis M. Andrews Sports Complex, 2401 E. Cherry St. The semis will begin at 9 a.m., and the gold and bronze-medal games will begin at 11 a.m.
Most of the 12 competing squads come from county fire departments, with exceptions being the Tampa, St. Petersburg, Fort Lauderdale, Miami Beach and Hialeah teams.

+ Free workouts begin this month
Anytime Fitness of Plant City is sponsoring “Free Workout Saturdays” at Dr. Martin Luther King Park, 1903 E. Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd., for the entire month of May. The workout sessions, which will begin at 10:30 a.m. every Saturday in May, include calisthenics, relay races, tug-of-war games and more, while also providing programs for people of all ages and fitness levels.
“We want our community to be as healthy and active as possible – and we hope that the Free Workouts Saturdays will show folks that exercise can be fun,” Richard Ryan, owner of Anytime Fitness, said in a release. The exact location of the workouts is between the ball fields at the MLK park, and the area will be marked with several flags.
