Another day, another great underdog story at Brandon High School.
But, last night, the Durant Lady Cougars didn’t play like they were seeded lower than Plant City. They stunned the Lady Raiders, 11-0, in five innings to win the 7A-District 7 title.
Although the Lady Raiders’ offense was able to come through late in their semifinal game, they couldn’t get anything going against Durant freshman Sloan Hammons. Hammons was much more composed on the mound this time, giving up just two hits and one walk through all five innings.
Shannon Bell had another great day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, two runs, a double and a triple, but didn’t have the Lady Cougars’ hottest bat this time – that was sophomore Selena Bezares, who went 3-for-3 with three RBI, three runs, and a double.
The win gave Durant its third district title in three years. The last time it came up short was in 2011, when, coincidentally, the Lady Cougars fell, 2-1, to Plant City. Now, Durant’s opponent in the regional quarterfinals has yet to be determined.
