Approximately 58,000 registered voters in Hillsborough County will soon be receiving notification letters to make them aware that their personal information has been illegally accessed, reported a press release by Hillsborough County Supervisor of Elections Office.
The notifications follow an investigation, executed by federal, state and local law enforcement officials, that determined an unauthorized user appeared to have illegally accessed and copied files containing personal identification information, such as social security or driver license numbers, primarily from files used to conduct voter registration list maintenance, which is the state-mandated process by which the office continually reviews its voter roll to identify necessary updates.
According to the press released, the voter registration system and the ballot tabulation system, which have additional layers of security, weren’t accessed.
