
The 11-3 Strawberry Crest Chargers flag football team hosted the 9-5 Newsome Wolves in the last regular season game of the year.
The Strawberry Crest Chargers were on defense first against the Newsome Wolves. The first pass of the game by the Wolves was incomplete. The Wolves then got a first down on a nice curl route. The Wolves then went for a deep pass up the middle, but it was incomplete. Blaklee House had a nice flag pull on the quarterback, which set up a third and long. The Wolves attacked the middle of the field again for a big play, putting them on the Chargers side of the field. Emerald Swain almost picked it off for the Chargers but dropped it. The Wolves got a good number of yards on the slant and it brought up a third and goal. After another incomplete, it was fourth and goal for the Wolves, and they opted to go for it. Nasma Ador sacked the Wolves quarterback with a nice flag pull and forced a turnover on downs. Zoe Surrency had a short run for the Chargers on first down, followed by a catch by Riley Clark, bringing up third and medium. After another catch by Clark, the Chargers opted to punt it. The Wolves took over at the Chargers 30. The Wolves quarterback had a solid run with under three minutes left in the first quarter. The Wolves picked up a first down on a nice slant on the right side of the field which made it second and goal. The quarterback kept it for the rushing touchdown. After a successful one-point conversion, the Wolves were up 7-0 at the end of the quarter.
After back-to-back incomplete passes, the Chargers were faced with a third and long. They got the first down after a diving catch by Kate Hartman. Surrency then found Maddy Viera up the middle for a nice first down. Surrency then threw a beautiful pass to Sonnie Hartman for another Chargers first down. The Chargers threw an interception in the redzone and the Wolves took over. Rylee Pendino almost got an interception but set up second and long. The Wolves picked up the first down with a nice hook and ladder type play. Viera had a nice flag pull for the Chargers to bring up second and long. The Wolves had a runner in motion and found a wide-open receiver in the middle of the field for the first down. With under four minutes left in the first half, the Wolves dropped a deep pass, bringing up second and long. After two short plays, it was fourth down and the Wolves lined up to go for it. They scored a touchdown with a nice slant up the middle. After a failed conversion, it was 13-0 Wolves. After an incomplete pass on first down, Surrency passed it to House for a solid gain, bringing up third and short. Surrency then threw a perfect pass to Riley Clark for the first down. Surrency then found Sonnie Hartman for another first down, putting them near the redzone. A defensive holding on the Wolves made it first and goal for the Chargers. An offensive penalty on the Chargers negated a touchdown and instead backed them up some yards. After a short completion, the Chargers called a timeout with second and goal. After a timeout, the next play was incomplete, bringing up third down with 19 seconds in the half. A false start on the Chargers backed them up even farther. After a shot to the end zone was incomplete, it was fourth and goal. With 12 seconds left, the Chargers opted to go for it. They took it over with three seconds and the Wolves took a direct snap for a short run on the following play to end the first half with the Wolves up 13-0.
Starting the second half, Surrency found Clark for a first down on a nice curl route. The following two plays were incomplete, bringing up a third and long. After a deep pass attempt on third and long was incomplete, the Chargers were forced to punt. The Wolves took over at midfield for their first drive of the second half. They completed back to back plays on passes to move into Chargers territory relatively quickly. Nasma Ador had a nice swat at the line of scrimmage when she swatted the quarterback. After an incomplete pass, the Chargers Emerald Swain had a nice pass breakup which brought up fourth down. The Wolves lined up to go for it and Kate Hartman broke up the pass for the Chargers and forced a turnover on downs. With six minutes left in the third, the Chargers had their second drive of the half. The Chargers started the drive with a nice pass play with some pitch backs but then the next play was incomplete, bringing up a third and short at midfield. Surrency dialed up a nice pass down the sidelines to Kate Hartman for a big Chargers first down. After a bad snap, it was second and goal for the Chargers. An incomplete wheel pass brought up third and goal for the Chargers. The Chargers scored their first touchdown of the game with Surrency finding Kate Hartman on a curl route and Hartman turned it up field with multiple jukes for the touchdown. Then the duo of Surrency and Kate Hartman connected again for the conversion. With one minute left in the third quarter, the Chargers trailed 13-7. The Wolves quarterback kept it herself for a run and got a first down in the process. After an incomplete pass, the third quarter ended with the Wolves were up 13-7.
On the first play of the fourth, the Wolves got a big play up the middle bringing them to midfield. They picked up the first down on a small route to left field. After an incomplete and a bad snap, the Wolves were set up with a third and long. Ador got a flag pull on the quarterback for a sack which brought up fourth down. The Wolves were forced to punt it, and the Chargers took over at midfield with a little over seven minutes left in the game. The Wolves got a flag pull sack on Surrency, bringing up second and long for the Chargers. An incomplete pass deep brought up third and long. Surrency found Sonnie Hartman for a nice gain making it fourth and short. The Chargers, down 6, had to go for it and Surrency found Riley Clark for a first down. The Chargers got a short gain with four minutes left in the game bringing up a second and long. They tried a trick play and almost came down with it but it was incomplete. Surrency found Clark for a first down, making it first and goal. The Chargers got a trick play on the pitch and got a nice gain making it second and short with 1:52 left in the game. Surrency found Clark for their third connection of the drive. A Wolves timeout gave both teams a chance to regroup on a third and goal. After the timeout, the Wolves got a sack and brought up fourth and goal with 1:20 left in the game. The Wolves called a timeout with the game on the line for the following play. The Chargers failed to get the first down, and the Wolves got ball with 1:03 left in the game. The Wolves had a nice completion on a drag route and picked up a nice gain before the Chargers used a timeout with 57 seconds left. The Wolves got the first down with the quarterback keeping it to herself. An incomplete ball made it second and long with 19 seconds left. After a small drag route, the Wolves had a third and short and the Chargers called a timeout. The Wolves completed another pass short of the first, bringing up fourth and short. The Chargers used their last timeout of the game with 7 seconds left. The Wolves lined up to go for it and turned it over. The Chargers had 1 second on the clock with one play to try and tie it up. The Wolves tipped the pass for an incompletion and the Wolves won 13-7.
