The Bulls won the coin toss and deferred so the Chargers got the ball to start the game. They started the first drive at the 23. Running back Zayveon Springfield took a direct snap on the first offensive play of the game with an 8-yard gain. Sevin Bagnato drew the start at quarterback for the Chargers and did a quarterback sneak for a Chargers first down. Wide Receiver Calvin Francis caught the first pass of the game for a solid gain. On the next play, the Chargers fumbled at midfield and the Bulls took over at the 50 for their first drive of the game.
After two short plays by the Bulls, a Chargers penalty gave them an automatic first down. On first down, the Bulls had a false start and backed up 5 yards. It didn’t stop the Bulls, as they found a wide receiver wide open for a first down in the Chargers redzone. After two short runs, the Bulls fumbled in the redzone and the Chargers took over at the 13-yard line with 5:35 left in the first.
The Chargers went for a deep pass attempt but couldn’t connect. Timmy Woods caught a screen for a solid gain making it third and short. After a short run, the Chargers were forced to punt.
The Bulls took over at the 50-yard line for their second drive of the game. They were forced to punt on a 3 and out. A great punt put the Chargers at their own 4-yard line with 2:28 left in the first. A false start on the Chargers put them at their own 2-yard line. The penalty didn’t stop the Chargers as Sevin Bagnato found Calvin Francis down the sideline for a big gain, tackled at the 33-yard line. After a short run on a direct snap, the Chargers called their first timeout of the half. After two more snaps, it brought up a 4th and short, but not before the quarter ended. The score was 0-0 after the first.
The Chargers opted to go for it on fourth down at midfield and a “tush push” play got them the first down. After a short run, Bagnato passed it to Woods for the first down inside Bulls territory. The Chargers fumbled on the next play and the Bulls took over at the 45-yard line with 9:38 in the half. Defensive lineman Steven Diaz got the Chargers defense hyped as he had a nice tackle for loss. Then, linebacker Jake Curtin had a beautiful sack for a big loss, which brought up third and long. The Bulls had a solid catch, but it wasn’t enough for the first down and they had to punt it.
The Chargers took over inside their own 20 with 7:16 left in the first half. They opened the drive with a huge gain as Bagnato found tight end Jacob Ogden wide open down the sidelines and the Chargers got to midfield. On the very next play, running back Zion Weems ran for a first down. An encroachment on the Bulls put the Chargers five yards closer. After two short runs, the Chargers were faced with a third and long and they called a timeout to dial up a play with 3 minutes remaining in the half. On third down, the Chargers threw an incomplete pass and lined up to attempt the field goal on 4th down. A bad snap went over the kicker’s head and as a result, the Bulls took over at midfield. The Bulls fumbled on their first play of the drive but ended up recovering it. Two more runs for the Bulls and they picked up a first down, followed by a water break timeout. After another short run, the Bulls struck first on a slant for a touchdown. They were up 7-0 with 22 seconds remaining in the half. After a small completion to Calvin Francis, the first half ended with the Chargers down 7-0.
The second half started with the Bulls getting the ball with the lead. They started the drive at their own 28-yard line. After two runs, an injury timeout was called as a Chargers defender was down. On third down, the pass was incomplete and they were forced to punt on the 3 and out.
The Chargers started their first drive of the half at their own 35-yard line. Woods caught a short pass to start the drive. The Bulls sacked Bagnato on second down, which brought up a third and long. Bagnato kept it on third and long and ran for the first down, putting them at midfield. After a short run and an incomplete, the Chargers were again met with a third and long. They failed to get the first down and ended up going for it with a fake punt. They got the first down, but a penalty brought them back even further and negated the first down.
The Bulls took over at their own 14-yard line. After a short run, an incomplete pass from the Bulls made it third and long. After another 3 and out, the Bulls were forced to punt.
The Chargers started the following drive with great field position after a nice punt return, starting at the Bull’s 22-yard line. A tough run by Weems put the Chargers in their first goal-line opportunity of the game. Weems ran it again; this time he was tackled at the 2-yard line. It was the third time is a charm as Weems ran it in for the touchdown and the Chargers tied it up with a score of 7-7 with 3:36 left in the third.
The kickoff was a touchback so the Bulls took over at the 25-yard line. After two short runs, it brought up a third and long. Defensive back Cameron Crowe picked it off for the Chargers.
The Chargers took over at the 30-yard line with 2:05 left in the third. Weems scored once again, this time on a beautiful cut back into open field as he walked in for the Chargers go-ahead touchdown. It was 14-7 with 1:55 left in the third.
The Bulls had a solid kickoff return and started the drive at the 31-yard line. They ran it three times and picked up the first down. An offsides penalty gave the Bulls 5 more yards. The Chargers picked it off again, this time it was defensive back Hunter Hall. The Chargers took over at their own 15-yard line with 53 seconds left in the third. After a short run by Weems, the third quarter ended and the Chargers were up 14-7.
The Chargers started the fourth at their own 19-yard line. They started with a 6-yard pass to Woods, which brought up third and short. A short run wasn’t enough for the first and the Chargers were forced to punt. The Bulls blocked the punt, recovered it and walked in for the easy special team’s touchdown. The game was tied 14-14 with 10:14 left to play.
The Chargers started the following drive at the 20. After an incomplete pass, Bagnato ran for the Chargers first down. A short run by Weems made it second and long. A play action by Bagnato found tight end Jacob Ogden wide open down the sidelines for a first putting the Chargers at midfield. After a short run by Weems, a Bulls penalty tacked on 5 more yards making it second and short. Bagnato ran it on a quarterback draw making it third and 1. An offside by the Bulls gave the Chargers a first down. A timeout was called with 6:02 left in the game and the Chargers were at the Bulls 31-yard line. A pitch play to Weems got the Chargers another first down. A short run and an incomplete pass made it third and 5 for the Chargers who were in the redzone. They went back to Weems and he delivered with another Chargers first down. It was first and goal at the 5-yard line for the Chargers. They handed the ball off to Weems again and he was tackled at the one-yard line. The Bulls called a timeout with 3:08 left in the game. There was no gain on the next play and another Bulls timeout was called with 2:53 left in the game. Bagnato ran it in and the Chargers regained the lead making it 21-14 with 2:44 left in the game.
Jose Aponte had a nice tackle for the Chargers on the kickoff and as a result, the Bulls started the drive at their own 18-yard line. They started the drive off aggressively as they got a quick 8 yards on a pass. A bad snap made it third and long after the Bulls quarterback had to run for it backwards. Steven Dias got a huge sack for the Chargers, making it 4th and long with 1:48 left in the game. Aponte did it again, this time with a nice open-field tackle, forcing a turnover on downs.
The Chargers got the ball back at their own 15-yard line with 1:03 left in the game. They took multiple knees to drain the clock and the final score was 21-14 with the Chargers ending their losing streak.
