Plant City commissioners directed city staff to explore options for renaming a segment of Thonotosassa Road during their Jan. 14 meeting.
The directive came from results of a survey of all property owners along the three roads named Thonotosassa in Plant City. Segment one stretches from the city limits southeast to Baker Street. The second spans from the first segment east-southeast to Mobley Street, and the third from Mobley Street southeast to Dort Street.
The city’s survey asked property owners and businesses on all three segments whether they were experiencing confusion and whether they would support renaming one or more of the segments. Overwhelmingly, the results indicated that property owners on the third segment experienced the most confusion and that they favored renaming.
Of the 12 property owners on segment three, 86% reported customers experienced confusion. Moreover, 71% favored renaming the segment.
City Manager Greg Horwedel said renaming the road only would involve costs associated with replacing street signs. Horwedel also advised against simply adding a direction, such as east or west, to the name.
“It’s best to have a clean break,” he said.
