At the Hillsborough County School Board meeting on Tuesday, June 9, Susan Sullivan was named the new principal for Plant City High School, effective July 1, 2015.
Sullivan will be taking over the position currently held by Colleen Richardson, who retired at the end of the school year after 31 years at PCHS.
Sullivan began her career in 1981 in Hillsborough County. She has worked at Marshall Middle School, Plant City High School, and is currently the principal at Tomlin Middle School. Sullivan has been the principal at Tomlin since 2008. She is also active in the Plant City community. Sullivan worked as a swim coach for 25 years and is a member of the praise team at First Baptist Church.
The Hillsborough County School Board approved the motion for Sullivan’s promotion, and the vote for the appointment was unanimous.
In her interview for the position, which took place during a community panel last month, Sullivan stated that if selected as the new principal she would work on increasing student achievement and connecting students to mentors. She believes that proper managing of student conduct leads to a reduced number of referrals, and wants to ensure that students are offered after school programs and activities.
Sullivan also said during her interview that she wants to see more students in Advanced Placement (AP) classes, and that she wants to meet with students and parents to gain their input about necessary changes to the school.
While at Tomlin, Sullivan has made sure that her students adopt the core Tomlin values of respect, integrity and community.
The appointment to principal of PCHS comes on the heels of Sullivan’s most recent achievement–being named the HCPTSA Middle School Principal of the Year.
The full story on Sullivan’s PTSA award and her new appointment to principal at PCHS will be available in this Friday’s edition of the Plant City Times & Observer.
