THE COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER

You may not have noticed the building that sits next to the County Courthouse, but you should take notice. The facility is the Plant City Community Resource Center. It houses outstanding resources that you wouldn’t know about if you just drive by.

The Hillsborough County Health Care Services

This office conducts its Healthy Living Program, which provides resources to help people be healthy. The on-site Healthy Living Center is free to residents of Hillsborough County who are 18 or older. The center provides weight machines, dumbells, treadmills, stationary bikes, and fitness classes. In addition, the program offers classes on stopping smoking, heart health, diabetes, weight loss, and nutrition and healthy eating. Many of these classes can also be viewed online. Also, wellness specialists can create individualized workout plans for residents.

Hillsborough County Department of Aging Services Senior Dining and Activity Center

The Department of Aging Services coordinates health and wellness services for seniors to mitigate dependency by focusing on positive development in physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, and financial health.

Those who are 60+ can get free lunches when funds are available. A lot of seniors are alone and need someone to talk to. In the community of seniors at the Dining and Activity Center they can be helped and help others. Those who make use of the service clearly enjoy being there.

An additional senior resource connected to the Center is Adult Day Services. The program provides comprehensive social, supportive, health and therapeutic services for functionally impaired adults such as those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Therapy is conducted in small groups, and consists of reality orientation, validation therapy, reminiscence, and games.

Social Services

This office offers several programs and services to meet the needs of low-income residents.

 • Education Empowerment assists with educational expenses like tuition, books, other fees, GED preparation, GED testing, and Adult Continuing Education.

 • Family Empowerment offers case management to help people achieve financial independence.

 • Youth Empowerment provides scholastic review sessions, health and fitness activities, college readiness experiences, summer recreational programs, and teaches social skills.

• Eviction Services assists residents with immediate needs like being in danger of losing utilities or shelter.

CareerSource

The mission of CareerSource is to expand career opportunities for people and to set them up for career success through comprehensive workforce solutions that meet the needs of the community. This office offers assistance in job searches, help in navigating applications for unemployment benefits, career fairs, help with building resumes, and interview training.

WIC Office

This is a federally-funded nutrition program for women and children under five. At no cost, WIC provides healthy foods, nutrition education and counseling, breastfeeding support, and referrals for health care. Fathers and legal guardians can also bring their children to apply for WIC.

Hillsborough County Property Appraiser’s Office

The Hillsborough County Property Appraiser’s Office assesses all property in the county and prepares the tax roll. The friendly staff at this satellite location provides all the services the main office in Tampa does. People can apply for exemptions, handle property deeds, split property, apply for greenbelt/agricultural classifications, and go there to understand and resolve issues with property and assessments.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO)

HCSO located this office in the building to serve as a convenient access point for community members, particularly those who would otherwise need to travel to the Falkenburg Road location in Tampa. The office provides essential services such as in-person report filing, which is especially valuable for residents who may need assistance with, or prefer an alternative to the online reporting system. Another reason HCSO placed and office in Plant City is they recognized that face-to-face interaction can be a benefit to the large senior population in the area when they are filing reports. And this office also offers fingerprinting services and bicycle registration for local residents.
