VSI W-League splits with Carolina

VSI Tampa Bay FC W-League fell to the Carolina Elite Cobras in VSI’s 2013 home opener Friday evening, but rebounded Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Carolina Elite, splitting the two-game season opening series at Plant City Stadium.

A header from defender Cara Patterson locked up VSI’s first goal four minutes into the second half on Sunday afternoon. Patterson, a Canadian native and University of South Florida Bull, perfectly placed the deflected ball past Carolina keeper Maggie Grisell.

Almost 15 minutes later second half substitution, Victoria Abnathy blew by a Carolina defender to pass the ball into the back of Carolina’s open net. Abnathy plays for Florida State University. The two unassisted goals are VSI’s first two of the 2013 W-League season.

VSI will hit the road to face the Atlanta Silverbacks before meeting up with Carolina again Saturday at MESA Soccer Stadium.
